New Zealand boosts visa benefits for partners of Green List international students

Published 12 July 2024

The New Zealand government has broadened the eligibility criteria for work visas for partners of international students studying in Green List fields.

Partners of international students enrolled in level 7 or 8 qualifications listed on the Green List can now apply for a work visa with unrestricted conditions.

These qualifications lead to highly skilled and in-demand roles, such as those in nursing, medicine, teaching, and dentistry. These fields, which are experiencing a shortage of skilled professionals in New Zealand, offer a faster route to residency for those obtaining relevant qualifications.

Students with visas studying for these qualifications can now also support their partners in applying for a Partner of a Student Work Visa. Additionally, dependent school-aged children of eligible partners can now be classified as domestic students, meaning they do not need to pay school tuition fees. This applies to anyone holding a Partner of a Student Work Visa.

Introduced in 2022, the Green List is part of the government's strategy to address skill shortages in crucial sectors and simplify the immigration process for professionals in high-demand occupations.

"SI-New Zealand helped me successfully apply to study business in New Zealand and I cannot thank them enough for their support. They assisted me with each step, ensuring I was aware of all my options in terms of program and university selection, making the process totally stress free."
