University of Auckland leads 2025 Sustainability Rankings in New Zealand

The University of Auckland has reaffirmed its status as a leader in sustainability education and research, maintaining its position as the number one university in New Zealand in the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2025.

Ranked 17th globally out of 1,744 institutions and fourth in Oceania, the University stands among the world’s top 1 percent of universities for environmental and social impact.

The 2025 rankings saw a 25 percent increase in participating institutions, highlighting the growing focus on sustainability within higher education. The University of Auckland excelled in the Environmental Impact category, placing in the global top 20 with an impressive score of 93.5. It achieved standout results in Environmental Education (98.2) and Environmental Research (97.5), showcasing its dedication to tackling global challenges like climate change.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Dawn Freshwater said: “Our long-term and ingrained efforts in environmental and social impact, coupled with our strong governance, underscore our dedication to sustainability. While the competition is intensifying, with more universities making significant strides, our early and ongoing commitment to sustainability ensures we remain at the forefront."
