University of Otago receives 5 Star rating in QS Stars assessment

Published 01 October 2024

The University of Otago has earned the world’s first 5+ Stars rating in the updated Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Stars assessment.

Following recent changes, the QS methodology now places a stronger focus on sustainability. Otago received the highest rating overall, with five stars in nine specific categories including teaching, employability, environmental impact, and global engagement.

Director of International Jason Cushen said: "As New Zealand’s first university, the University of Otago has a global reputation for research and teaching excellence. QS Stars demonstrates to the world other aspects of the unique Otago experience that are important to students, such as our world class facilities, exceptional graduate employability, and high levels of student support."

Launched in 2009, QS Stars is a rating system that provides a detailed look at higher education institutions worldwide. Over 700 universities are evaluated against dozens of indicators across at least eight categories. After the assessment, universities are awarded an overall Star result, depending on the number of points achieved through the evaluation.
