Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) is a tertiary education provider situated in the Nelson and Marlborough regions of New Zealand. NMIT offers various courses across various fields and a broad range of study areas, including business, arts and media, civil engineering, culinary arts, information technology, nursing, marine science, and viticulture and winemaking.

With over 100 courses available, ranging from undergraduate certificates to master's qualifications, students have many options to pursue their academic interests. The institution typically enrols around 3,000 students annually, with approximately 10% of the student body comprising international students.

NMIT maintains strong connections with local businesses and industries, ensuring course content remains up-to-date and aligned with industry needs. At NMIT, class sizes are small (averaging 30 students per class) to enable your tutors to get to know you and your needs. NMIT offers personalized support services to international students to assist with all aspects of a student’s learning journey, including academic and pastoral support, making the transition to study in New Zealand smooth and rewarding.

NMIT is part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology.

Services for International Students

The International team at NMIT assists students with orientation programs, pastoral care, and academic advising to ensure a smooth transition into their studies. Additionally, NMIT’s student association, SANITI, arranges several activities for international students to meet students from other cohorts and explore more of the Nelson/Marlborough region. This wide range of FREE activities is a great way to get involved in student life and immerse yourself in Kiwi culture.

Accommodation

Accommodation is key to a successful journey in New Zealand. While NMIT does not book accommodation for you, its Wellbeing Team will provide recommendations and guidance on what options may be best for you in Nelson. Please note that all accommodation is independent of NMIT, and students must book and secure accommodation for themselves.

Students studying at NMIT’s main campus in Nelson may consider Nikau Apartments, located right beside the campus. These serviced apartments are ideal for independent living alongside other students in a secure, modern, and study-friendly environment.

Homestay is another popular choice for international students and is available for students studying at any of NMIT’s campuses. Homestay boarding provides a unique opportunity to live in a furnished room with a local New Zealand family in Nelson or Marlborough. It is a great way to settle in a new city, country, or even an environment if this is your first time living away from home.
