Art Courses in New Zealand

Studying Art in New Zealand

International students applying to study Art in New Zealand must choose the right university or Arts school in accordance with the specific art form they wish to learn. Each art school has different equipment and specialisations to help you learn.

Studio-based work is central to all Art courses and can include painting, sculpture, installation, printing, photography and digital media, with students specialising in their own areas of interest. Universities often invite professional artists and critics to talk to students and also include a public display of final-year students' art along with the professional artists’ studio works.

Graduate Art Careers

Art graduates will move into careers in multimedia, publishing, advertising, museums, galleries, fashion, and the film industry, doing a wide range of roles which can include photography, illustration, graphic design, interior design and website design.

Art Entry Requirements

Entry requirements vary for each New Zealand university, but international students will need an IELTS score of 6.5 overall, no lower than 6.0 in each component, and an International Baccalaureate score of 34 points. A personal portfolio of work is a must, and some art schools prefer prior knowledge of the history of art and related subjects.
